Security Profiles in Business Objects – Information Design Tool

A group of security settings can be applied using Security Editor to a universe (.unx) which is published in the repository. Profiles are stored independently in repository from the universe and they are deleted when the universe is deleted.

There are two types of security profiles in SAP Business Objects Information Design Tool 4.x:
1. Data security and
2. Business security

Data Security : It can be defined on objects in the data foundation.
You can define the following types of data securities.
– Connection
– Controls
– SQL
– Tables and
– Rows

Ex 1:
You can define Custome user attributes in CMC and assign custome values to individual users. These custome attribute values can be referenced using and @variable in a data security profile for a universe. The User Attribute COUNTRY contains the value of the country of each user in the CMC. Specify the attribute’s internal name surrounded by single quotes: @Variable(‘SI_COUNTRY’)

Ex2: To restrict data retrieved in a query to the current user, user the BOUSER variable in the WHERE clause:
WHERE Employees.Employee_Name = @Variable(‘BOUSER’)

You can create more than one Data Security Profile for a relational universes. Security settings in the profile determine what objects, data, and connections the user sees when connecting to the universe.

Business Security : It can be defined on objects to grant or deny the use of business layer objects in the query panel. (ex: Dimensions ,Attributes, Measures, Calculated members, Filters, Prompts, etc…). It is not possible to grant or deny a hierarchy level.

You can define the following types of business securities.
– Create Query
– Display Data and
– Filter data returned in queries.

Multiple profiles can be defined for each universe. When you run a query from the Business Layer Editor, security profile settings do not apply.

Assign security profiles to users : Once the profile is assigned to a user, the settings in the profile determine what objects, data, and connections the user sees when connecting to the universe.
